What is Networking?

A crucial element of PR is networking. In social or professional contexts, networking is the process of communicating with others who share common interests. Many people utilize networking in PR to meet others in the field and expand their social network, which can be useful while seeking future opportunities or a career. Here are some helpful tips that are useful as you begin to network.

Research the type of PR you want to get involved in

The PR and communication field is described often as an all encompassing industry, meaning there are multiple different paths you can take when seeking a career in PR. By researching and narrowing down exactly what type of PR interests you the most, whether that be media relations or health communications, you will be able to connect and network with people who are in the exact professional position in which you see yourself. By having an exact focus for your goals, you are more likely to stand out to the PR professionals you will be networking with.

Use LinkedIn to Network

LinkedIn is your best friend! Connect with people in the PR field on LinkedIn, especially JMU Alumni, Faculty and Students to build your Network. LinkedIn can help you find people who not only work in PR but also specific fields that you may be interested in within the Industry. Don’t Be Afraid To Reach Out

Networking can definitely be nerve racking but it is important to not let your nerves hold you back. Confidence can go a long way when it comes to connecting with someone new! Though, it can seem as though networking is just a bunch of small talk, it can likely lead you to big opportunities in college as well as post graduation. So when connecting with people, be yourself and be genuine. Networking might not be easy but It most definitely gets easier with practice.
