Paola Argueta, the Corporate Communications Coordinator at the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium, sat down with members of the JMU Chapter of PRSSA. She shared information about her college life, life before working at Hard Rock Stadium, and her day-to-day life.
As the first generation of her family to be attending college, she started at a local community college and eventually transferred to the University of Maryland at College Park where she received a bachelor’s degree in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations.
Argueta began her career in sports by interning at Good Morning Washington and the Washington Football team. Then, she took an unpaid internship position and moved to Los Angeles in an effort to surround herself with more possible connections. She was working day jobs to support herself while also completing her internship.
After several months of looking and applying for sports communications jobs, Argueta landed a job working with the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium. She was thrown into the position as her supervisor was taking leave when she arrived. Within this experience, she learned to make mistakes and manage everything on her own.
Now, almost three years after starting this position, Argueta works eight-to-14-hour days to plan events and monitor media for both the Miami Dolphins football team as well as the Hard Rock Stadium. She aims to make the tole of media as easy as possible and tries to highlight what she wants the media to see.
Once we talked about her journey, we asked her questions about her career and sports communication. Check out her answers below!
1. What is your best advice for someone wanting to enter the field of sports communication?
Remember sports is competitive! You have to be your own monitor and wait for your break. Do not be disheartened by this but continue to search and build your connections.
Do not try to be sports specific. If you are not having much luck within sports communications, remember that you can look elsewhere. Do something that helps your versatility and makes you stand out on your resume.
2. How can we stand out on our resume in these competitive job fields?
Being knowledgeable of trends and social media! Make a portfolio, a burner account on social media, etc. to show organizations that you can do many things.
3. What are your best tips for interviews?
Show your personality in your interview. People want to hire who they get along with.
Research an organization and their values prior to an interview. You want to be able to imbody the organization and make sure their values align with yours.
JMU PRSSA had an amazing time talking with Paola Argueta about her experiences and even got to be included on her TikTok! She is a great connection to follow for those looking to pursue sports communications.
