Embarking on a new career path can be an intimidating prospect, one that includes many challenging hurdles. You do not have to face these hurdles alone, there are many experienced professionals who have faced similar challenges. Here are some helpful tips to get you started on the right path.
1) Record everything you can
Whether its digital or handwritten, its essential to keep a record of important information such as dates, client requests and meeting agendas. Recording the information allows for easily created schedules and the ability to stay on top of tasks. It is important to go back and review notes from meetings to ensure you are following the plan laid out by your account team and firm.
2) Network, Network, Network
One of the biggest tools for a public relations practitioner is to network with others. The larger your network, the more you will learn from others and can begin to expand on your own skill set. Utilize tools such as LinkedIn or organizations like PRSSA to grow your network of people because you may never know when someone’s expertise could be beneficial.
3) Challenge Yourself
While many tasks can be intimidating, its important to not back down and to challenge your own capabilities as a public relations practitioner. If you do not take on challenges, you will never be able to grow your skill set. Don’t be afraid of failing, the public relations world is filled with like-minded people who want to see you succeed and they will provide you with guidance on how to improve your work.
